ROBRADY design and DK City’s db0 Electric Folding Bike Thrills Taipei

At their December 26^th launch party at Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan, DK City unveiled the db0 3.0 electric folding bike to the attending public, including over 80 press representatives. Mr. Matthew “Mashow” Lien and his wife Daisy, spokescouple for the db0 3.0, joined DK City President Mr. Hans Huang to host the party. Mr. Lien is a globally recognized world music singer-songwriter and producer whose music focuses on environmental and cultural themes. The bikes were made available to the attendees, who could take a test drive and assess the bike’s performance.

The db0 3.0 received unanimous praise from the audience, who were impressed by its sleek designer appearance, eco-friendly message, and “humanized power”. The event also highlighted DK City’s relationship with ROBRADY by showcasing videos that introduced its studio and team. In early 2009, DK City had sought out ROBRADY design after seeing their award-winning work on the eco-friendly electric Vectrix VX-1 Maxi Scooter and Super Bike, as well as their work with designing many products for Segway. The two companies partnered in August 2009 to design, develop and manufacture the db0 folding bike line. The db0 3.0 has garnered international design recognition with the receipt of the gold Spark award in October of this year. ROBRADY Unfolds the Gold at the 2009 Spark Awards

ROBRADY design has been awarded a Gold Spark award in the Mobility category of this year’s competition for their db0 Electric Folding Bike design. Partnering with Taiwanese manufacturer DK City, ROBRADY design developed a eco-conscious, user friendly e-bike that celebrate the concept of a “folding bike” – a uniquely original design solution that is instantly recognized as the next generation in folding e-bikes. The bicycle market is new territory for both ROBRADY design and DK City. Both partners are eager to continue their exploration of this environmentally smart market and are driven by their desire to protect and preserve the planet for future generations.

The new db0 bike, which is scheduled for release to the market in the first quarter of 2010, is first in a series of electric bikes that embodies their mission to design a series of clean, bold, and innovatively simple folding bikes. The design promotes the folding mechanism unlike it has ever been done before in this market – as a “focal point” that adds visual value to the bike. The battery configuration and integrated travel handles are also treated as iconic elements that offer aesthetic as well as ergonomic benefits. The db0 bike design is currently being featured at the Autodesk Design Gallery in San Francisco, CA as part of the Spark Awards show.

ROBRADY Designer’s Log: Eurobike Wrap

It’s great to be back in the USA and before we can call our Eurobike Mission a wrap, we have a few photos to share. What we liked and what we thought was interesting- if you want more or have a question on anything let us know.

One of the highlights of the show was a Thursday evening dinner with the LEV association (Light Electric Vehicle). Led by Ed Benjamin of Benjamin consulting, the evening was a great networking opportunity for all those in attendance- a real global event. Across the board the conversations were very open and optimistic. Of special note, the market guidance was very bullish going forward. We had a chance to connect with designers from major manufacturers, start-ups, and authorities on the subjects of bicycles, all aspects of electric technologies and where the two might be heading in the future. Well worth the adventure of getting back to Konstanz through the late hours of via taxis, ferries, and buses… and a bit of walking of course.

ROBRADY Designer’s Log: Friedrichshafen, Germany

Good morning and welcome to the ROBRADY blog covering our attendance at the Eurobike 2009 show in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The event is scheduled from the first to the fifth of September and is an annual event touted as THE show for European cycling and accessories. The mood of the show on this first day has been very upbeat. Two extra halls have been opened up to accommodate additional exhibitors and the show floor traffic is quite substantial. We’ve had several successful meetings on this first day, catching up with programs in process, as well as exploring a number of new opportunities. Early indications are that it would appear ROBRADY design will be investing further in this market.

This “designers notebook” features the first in a selection of photographs we shot while touring the first day of the show. You can find several sites that are covering the news and events of the show- we’re posting imagery that we’ve noted as interesting purely from a designers perspective. Enjoy.

A Match Made in Taiwan

Considering ROBRADY’s award-winning, eco-friendly design work on the Vectrix VX-1 Maxi Scooter and Super Bike, it wasn’t a surprise when Taiwan’s DK City sought us out for a new line of innovative folding electric bicycles. Ed Benjamin of Benjamin Consulting coordinated the introduction in Taiwan where negotiations began in February. ROBRADY and DK City have now signed an agreement to partner, develop and manufacture the bikes. The first series will be debuted by DK City at the 2009 Eurobike show in Friedrichshafen, Germany this September to a select group of customers. The planned public unveiling is scheduled for sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009.
